“How many solar panels do I need?” is the first question most homeowners ask us. The honest answer depends on one number, and it is not your roof size. It is how much electricity your home used over the past 12 months.
Most tri-state homes land somewhere between 13 and 22 panels. That range is wide because usage varies a lot house to house. Below we walk through the actual math, so you can estimate your own system before anyone visits.
The Quick Math Behind Solar System Sizing
Three numbers decide your panel count. Grab a recent utility bill and you can run this in two minutes.
1. Your annual kWh. Find the total kilowatt-hours your home used over the last year. Many bills show a 12-month graph. If not, your online utility account has the history.
2. Production per kilowatt. In New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, each kilowatt of solar generates roughly 1,100 to 1,300 kWh per year. Use 1,200 as a middle estimate.
3. Panel wattage. Modern residential panels run 400 to 450 watts each. That works out to 0.4 or 0.45 kW per panel.
Here is the formula in action. A home using 8,000 kWh per year needs about 6.7 kW of solar. At 440 watts per panel, that is roughly 15 panels.
What the Average NY, NJ, and CT Home Needs
Federal energy data gives a useful starting point for each state. Actual homes vary widely, but these averages show how much the three states differ.
New York: about 566 kWh per month, or roughly 6,800 kWh a year. That points to a 5.5 to 6 kW system, near 13 or 14 panels.
New Jersey: about 639 kWh per month, or roughly 7,700 kWh a year. Expect 6 to 7 kW, or 14 to 16 panels.
Connecticut: about 678 kWh per month, or roughly 8,100 kWh a year. That lands near 7 kW, or 15 to 17 panels.
Averages hide a lot, though. A Bergen County home with central air and a pool can easily double the state figure.
Your Utility Limits How Big You Can Go
Bigger is not automatically better in the tri-state. Each state sets rules that tie system size to what you actually use.
New Jersey rule N.J.A.C. 14:8-4.3 caps your system at what your home used over a historical 12-month period. Oversize past that and you lose the 1:1 net metering benefit on the extra production.
New York limits residential net-metered systems to 25 kW per electric meter. Very few homes come close to that ceiling. Practically speaking, your usage history is the real constraint, not the cap.
Connecticut works similarly. Installers there size systems around your home’s consumption under the RRES program, not around your roof’s maximum capacity.
Roof Space, Shade, and Direction Change the Answer
The math above tells you a target. Your roof decides whether it fits.
Each 400-watt panel takes up about 20 square feet. A 15-panel array needs roughly 300 square feet of usable roof, plus clearance for fire code setbacks and vents.
Direction matters too. South-facing roofs produce the most in our region. East and west roofs still work well, though they typically give up 10 to 20 percent of production.
Shade is the biggest variable of all. A mature oak or a neighbor’s chimney can wipe out a whole row’s output for hours. We see this constantly on wooded lots in Morris County and northern Westchester. Adding a few panels, or using module-level electronics, usually solves it.
Should You Size for an EV, a Heat Pump, or a Battery?
Your last 12 months of usage describe the home you have now. Plans change.
An electric vehicle adds roughly 3,000 to 4,000 kWh a year for a typical commute. That alone can mean 6 to 8 more panels. A heat pump or a pool heater pushes the number higher still.
Tell your designer about those plans upfront. Adding panels later means another permit, another interconnection application, and another trip to your roof.
Batteries work differently. A Tesla Powerwall stores what your panels already make, so it does not change your panel count. What it changes is how your home behaves during an outage.
