Solar Installation Timeline: How Long It Really Takes in NY, NJ, and CT

If you are weighing solar this summer, you probably want one number: how long the whole thing takes. The honest answer is that the solar installation timeline in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut runs 8 to 14 weeks. That covers everything from a signed agreement to a system legally producing power.

Panels go up in a day or two. Everything else is paperwork, inspections, and utility approvals. Knowing where the time actually goes helps you plan, and it helps you spot an installer who is guessing.

What “Finished” Actually Means

A finished install is not a finished project. Your system cannot legally send power to the grid until your utility issues Permission to Operate, usually shortened to PTO. That letter is the real finish line.

Before it arrives, three parties have to sign off: your town’s building department, your electrical inspector, and your utility. Each one moves at its own pace.

The Solar Installation Timeline, Stage by Stage

Four stages stand between a signature and a producing system. Here is what each one realistically takes in the tri-state area.

Stage 1: Site Survey and Engineering (1 to 3 Weeks)

After you sign, a technician visits to measure your roof, photograph your electrical panel, and confirm your service size. That visit usually happens within a week or two.

Engineering follows. Our team produces a stamped plan set covering panel layout, racking attachment points, conduit runs, and structural load calculations. Complex roof geometry and older electrical panels add time here.

Homes that need a service upgrade or a new roof first will see this stage stretch. Our in-house roofing division handles that work on the same project schedule. You are not coordinating two separate contractors.

Stage 2: Permits and Interconnection Application (1 to 6 Weeks)

Two applications go out at the same time. One goes to your municipal building department. The other goes to your utility as an interconnection request.

New York homeowners benefit from the state’s Unified Solar Permit. Municipalities that adopted it must issue a determination within 14 calendar days for eligible residential systems under 25 kW. That is one of the faster permitting frameworks in the country.

New Jersey runs town by town under the Uniform Construction Code. Smaller boroughs sometimes turn permits around in under two weeks. Busier offices in denser counties can take four to eight.

Connecticut towns vary in much the same way. Alongside the permit, Eversource or United Illuminating reviews your interconnection application. That review typically takes one to three weeks.

Stage 3: Installation Day (1 to 3 Days)

This is the fast part. A typical residential array goes up in a single day. Larger systems, battery additions, or a main panel upgrade push it to two or three days.

Crews set the racking, mount the panels, run conduit, and tie into your main service. If you are adding a Tesla Powerwall or an EV charger, that work happens in the same window.

Stage 4: Inspection and Permission to Operate (2 to 6 Weeks)

Your town inspects the electrical work first. Once it passes, the utility takes over.

Con Edison and Orange & Rockland run their own pre-energization review before issuing PTO. They verify your service equipment, revenue metering, and disconnect configuration. That step commonly adds two to four weeks downstate.

PSE&G and JCP&L tend to move faster, though restricted circuits can slow a project down. Atlantic City Electric often clears applications in under two weeks. In Connecticut, Eversource sets a bidirectional meter and then releases PTO, and most projects clear that full stage in four to eight weeks.

What Actually Causes Delays

Most blown timelines trace back to a short list of causes. An incomplete permit package triggers a plan review correction and restarts the clock. Sometimes a roof turns out to need replacing. Undersized electrical service requires a utility upgrade of its own.

Peak season matters too. Spring and fall are the busiest months for building departments across the tri-state, and review queues lengthen.

The fix is unglamorous. Accurate drawings, complete applications, and an installer who files with your specific town regularly.

Why Starting Now Puts You Ahead of Winter

Count backward from January. A project signed in late July or August generally reaches PTO by October or November. Your system is then producing before winter electric rates hit.

Wait until October and you are filing permits during the fall rush. PTO could land in February, after you have paid for another full winter of utility power.

Incentives do not expire on that schedule, so this is about your bill, not your eligibility. New York still offers a 25% state tax credit capped at $5,000, plus NY-Sun rebates and sales and property tax exemptions. New Jersey homeowners still earn SuSI SREC-II payments, roughly $680 per year for 15 years, with 1:1 net metering on top. Connecticut’s RRES program and the Energy Storage Solutions battery incentive remain available as well.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Ask any installer the same three things. How many permits have you filed in my town this year? Who submits the interconnection application, you or me? What is your realistic PTO estimate for my utility?

Vague answers are a warning sign. A local company that files in Mahwah, Middletown, and Stamford every month can give you specifics.
