How the NJ SuSI Program Pays You for Solar in 2026

If you own a home in New Jersey, the NJ SuSI program is one of the biggest reasons solar still pays off in 2026. The state pays you for the clean power your panels produce. That income lasts a full 15 years, and the rate is set before you ever flip the switch.

At Infinity Energy, we install solar across New Jersey every week. Homeowners ask us the same question again and again. How does the state actually pay me for going solar? Here is the plain-English answer.

What is the NJ SuSI program?

SuSI stands for the Successor Solar Incentive program. It is New Jersey’s main way of rewarding homeowners who install solar panels.

For a typical home, SuSI runs through a track called the Administratively Determined Incentive, or ADI. The name sounds technical, but the idea is simple. Your system earns one credit for every 1,000 kWh it generates.

Each credit is called an SREC-II. New Jersey buys these credits from you for 15 straight years. You lock in the rate when you register, so it never drops during your term.

How much does SuSI pay in 2026?

As of mid-2026, a net-metered home system earns $77 per SREC-II. The new rate took effect July 27, 2026. Homes registered before that date kept the older $85 rate for their full term.

Here is what that looks like in real dollars. A typical New Jersey home system produces close to 9,000 kWh a year. At $77 per credit, that comes to roughly $690 a year, every year, for 15 years.

Add it up and SuSI alone can return around $10,000 over the life of the incentive. Because the rate locks in at registration, acting early matters. The sooner you install, the sooner your 15-year clock starts.

Net metering adds a second layer of savings

SuSI payments sit on top of net metering, and net metering is where most of your bill savings come from. New Jersey offers full one-to-one net metering statewide.

In plain terms, your meter runs backward when your panels make more power than you use. You bank that extra power as a credit at the full retail rate. At night or on cloudy days, you spend those credits instead of buying power.

Credits roll over from month to month. Once a year, your utility trues up the account. Between net metering and SuSI, most of our New Jersey customers cover the large majority of their electric bill.

Two tax breaks most homeowners miss

New Jersey waives the 6.625% state sales tax on solar equipment. That saves you money on day one, before your panels ever switch on.

The state also protects you on property taxes. Solar raises your home value, yet New Jersey law keeps that added value off your tax bill. Your home is worth more, but your tax assessment stays the same.

The sales tax break needs no effort from you. Your installer applies it at the time of purchase. For the property tax exemption, you file a short certificate with your local assessor.

Which New Jersey utilities qualify?

SuSI and net metering work the same across the state, no matter who sends your bill. Infinity Energy installs for homeowners served by all of New Jersey’s major utilities.

That includes PSE&G across much of the north and central parts of the state. JCP&L customers in central and western New Jersey qualify too. Down the shore and across the south, Atlantic City Electric homes are covered as well.

Do you keep the credits your system earns?

When you buy your system with cash or a loan, you own every SREC-II it produces. Those payments flow to you, not to a third party. That ownership is a big reason many homeowners choose to buy rather than lease.

With some lease or power-purchase deals, the provider keeps the incentives instead. Ask any installer who collects the SuSI payments before you sign. We walk you through both paths so the choice stays yours.

Is solar still worth it in New Jersey in 2026?

We will be honest with you. The SREC-II rate dropped a little in 2026, and that headline worried some homeowners. The real picture is still strong.

Electric rates in New Jersey keep climbing, so every kWh you make at home is worth more each year. SuSI still pays steady income for 15 years. Net metering still credits you at full retail value.

Stack those benefits together and solar remains one of the better home investments available in the Garden State. Many homeowners reach payback within the system’s warranty period, then enjoy years of low-cost power after that.
